Unlike many colorful minerals, these colors are not caused by dyes or surface treatments. Rainbow obsidian forms when silica-rich lava cools rapidly during volcanic eruptions, trapping microscopic layers and mineral inclusions within the glass. As light passes through these ultra-thin layers, it creates the shimmering rainbow effect through a process called light interference, similar to the colors seen in soap bubbles or oil on water.
